Langston University is seeking a dynamic individual with a passion for research, teaching, and learning to enhance the rich history of the Melvin B. Tolson Black Heritage Center. The selected individual will coordinate, manage, and maintain the Melvin B. Tolson Black Heritage Center and care for its extensive collection of African and African American historical artifacts.

This position involves developing and coordinating public programs and tours. Excellent customer service and technical skills are essential to conducting library orientations and instruction sessions. The librarian will collaborate with library staff to provide valuable services to the university and the surrounding community.

Position Details

  • Reports to: Dean/Director, University Libraries
  • Location: Langston University (Langston Campus)
  • Salary: $50,000 annually

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the research, teaching, and learning needs of the university.
  • Coordinate, manage, and maintain the Melvin B. Tolson Black Heritage Center, ensuring proper care of its extensive collection of African and African American historical artifacts.
  • Develop and coordinate public programs, exhibitions, and guided tours.
  • Conduct library orientation sessions and information literacy classes.
  • Provide general reference assistance and support for academic research.
  • Collaborate with other Langston University librarians and library staff as a valued team member.
  • Deliver exceptional customer service to students, faculty, and the broader university community.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Work Environment

  • This position is primarily office-based, with occasional travel required for events, meetings, or training sessions.
  • Office environment with moderate noise levels. Regular use of a computer, phone, and other office equipment, requiring prolonged periods of sitting and typing. Occasional lifting or carrying of materials (up to 25 pounds).
  • The successful candidate must provide documentation of identity and eligibility for employment, as required by the Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) of 1986.

Education & Experience

Position Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Studies or a related field.
  • Library experience with a focus on public services.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with excellent oral and written communication abilities.
  • Demonstrated technical proficiency and a commitment to continuous development in library technologies.
  • Availability to work select evenings and weekends as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Studies from an ALA-accredited institution.
  • Experience working in a museum or archival setting.
  • Experience in a higher education institution.
