Job Summary:

The Director/Dean of University Libraries is responsible for strategically planning innovative library services, including instruction, outreach, reference, and access programs that address the needs of a diverse university community. 

 The Director/Dean is the chief administrative officer for the G. Lamar Harrison Library and the Melvin B. Tolson Black Heritage Center. The Director/Dean reports directly to the Vice President for Academic Affairs and is responsible for all library services and operations. 


The Director/Dean exercises leadership in positioning library resources and facilities at the center of the academic communities they serve and provides vision and direction to support the learning communities that rely on them for teaching, learning, and research. The Director/Dean supervises the following positions: Head of Public Services, Head of Technical Services, Head of Special Collections, and Administrative Specialist. 


Duties and Responsibilities:

  •  Leads organizational change, build consensus around a strategic vision, and delegate responsibility appropriately.
  • Manages the financial resources.
  • Ensures access to library resources for students, faculty, and staff, regardless of campus or site.
  • Leads assessment of all library functions and revises programs appropriately based on assessment data.
  • Represents and promotes the University Libraries, formally and informally, to the University, community, and regional and national organizations.
  • Provides vision and direction to support the learning communities that rely on them for teaching, learning, and research.
  • Works effectively with Academic Affairs, department chairs, and faculty.
  • Serves on various committees of the university.
  • Coordinates educational programs and campus events that promote the library.
  • Cultivates external relations to promote the libraries and their mission to the university and to external communities that can benefit from them.
  • Works collaboratively with library staff to implement the Library's educational mission and to create positive physical and virtual work in the libraries.
  • Oversees the development and performance of library personnel including leading, supervising, mentoring, and providing development opportunities for librarians and staff.
  • Gathers and report all library statistics as required for annual reports, accreditation reports, and all other reports as necessary.
  • Cultivates external relations to promote the libraries and their mission to the university and to external communities that can benefit from them.

Position Qualifications:

Required Competencies and Skills:

  •  Experience with a diverse student, faculty, and staff population.
  • Well-developed collegial supervisory abilities and personnel management skills.
  • Experience in long-range planning.
  • Excellent oral written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Experience leading innovative efforts to integrate appropriate application of technology and library resource instruction to support teaching, learning and scholarship.
  • Appropriate budget management experience.
  • Experience with a diverse student, faculty, and staff population.
  • Management level comprehension and experience with library systems and automation.



Required Qualifications:

  • Master of Library Science, Master of Information Science, or equivalent degree from an ALA-accredited program.
  • Minimum of five years progressive administrative or managerial experience in academic libraries.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctorate relevant to leadership of a university library (e.g., Library Science, Information Science, Higher Education Leadership).
  • A record of achievement in the areas of research, teaching, and service that merits appointment as associate professor or professor.
  • Experience leading innovative efforts to integrate appropriate application of technology and information literacy to support teaching, life-long learning, and scholarship.
