Assistant Professor of Fire Protection and Safety Engineering Technology


The Division of Engineering Technology at Oklahoma State University (OSU) seeks applications for the position of tenure-track Assistant Professor of Fire Protection and Safety Engineering Technology.  The successful candidate will be expected to conduct research, teach undergraduate or graduate courses in fire protection and safety, mentor students, be involved in service to the university, and their profession.  With regard to research opportunities, the state of Oklahoma is a leader in the petrochemical, aerospace, energy, defense, and agricultural industries. OSU is also known internationally for the fire protection program.

Applicants with expertise (academic research and/or industry experience) in one or more of the following fields are encouraged to apply; fire protection engineering, industrial/occupational safety (including compliance programs), explosion protection/explosives/munitions, industrial hygiene, fire dynamics/modeling, process safety, or other similar fields.  This position includes temporary assignments with our partner international university. In addition, there are collaborative opportunities to develop and offer innovative continuing education courses as a part of OSU’s land grant mission.

The successful applicant will enhance the existing faculty teaching portfolio in terms of technical expertise and professional practice. Responsibilities include development, planning and implementation of a high quality curriculum. This includes development of learning materials, preparing lectures and laboratory assignments, and maintaining records to monitor student progress, achievement and attendance. Providing a rigorous ongoing assessment process for all courses is required. Classroom delivery is expected to incorporate principles of active learning. This position is expected to establish office hours and effectively manage graduate teaching assistants and/or undergraduate graders. The ability to accelerate development of student written and oral communication skills is essential. The desired candidate should possess strong interpersonal skills with the ability to motivate and inspire students while maintaining the highest standards in a very challenging curriculum.

Other desirable skills or interests include, but are not limited to, service as the advisor to a student organization, undergraduate and graduate student advising, and participation on departmental, college or university committees.

Division of Engineering Technology: This position will be located within the College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology, the Division of Engineering Technology is comprised of five programs including Construction Engineering Technology (CET), Electrical Engineering Technology (EET), Fire Protection and Safety Engineering Technology (FPSET), Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET), and Fire and Emergency Management Program (FEMP – M.S. and Ph.D. degrees only). All undergraduate programs are ABET-Accredited, four-year, BS in Engineering Technology degree programs. The EET and MET programs are preparing to offer an undergraduate Mechatronics Minor degree and a Master's degree in Mechatronics. The faculty are encouraged to interact with each other and develop multidisciplinary research projects in the Division of Engineering Technology and also in the college level. Salaries for Engineering Technology faculty at Oklahoma State University are competitive nationwide.

Qualifications:   A Masters’ degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering Technology, Safety Engineering, Occupational Safety, Process Safety, or related field is required.  Candidates with teaching and research experience at the university level, industrial experience, and professional licensure are preferred.  A Ph.D./Ed. is preferred with experience in research and teaching at the university level. Five years of industrial experience.
