Job Summary:

The Piano Technician primary duties are as follows: (70% tuning, 25% maintenance and repair)
The Piano Technician's duties include but are not limited to tuning, regulation, voicing, repairs, action refurbishing and preventative maintenance to maintain the fleet of the OSU Greenwood School of Music's piano inventory at an optimal level that supports all of GSM programs and continues the All-Steinway School designation.

The Piano Technician will also provide tuning and maintenance to the Steinway concert pianos in the McKnight Center.  The McKnight Center often requires a technician onsite during rehearsals and performances to address unforeseen technical issues.  Estimated number of performances per year at the McKnight Center varies from 175 - 200 (this tally includes both GSM and McKnight Center events).

Secondary Duties: (up to 5%)
The Piano Technician instructs a limited number of students in piano technology.  In collaboration with the piano faculty, he/she will determine the optimal plan for maintenance, long-term care, and oversight of the GSM piano inventory, including the development of schedules for tunings, voicing, and regular scheduled maintenance.

Minimum Qualifications:

Vocational/Technical degree in music.

Knowledge of Steinway and Sons manufacturing and service procedures. Skilled in general tuning, repair and maintenance of pianos. Ability to supervise and coordinate a program of piano maintenance. Ability to perform concert tuning, regulating and voicing. Knowledge of teaching practices in piano technology. Knowledge of customer service techniques. Knowledge of interpersonal communication techniques. Knowledge of instruction, facilitation, and training techniques as applied to music. Skill in use of piano technician tools such as tuning forks, electronic tuning devices and tuning hammers. Skill in both verbal and written communication. Ability to fine tune aurally.

Certification as a Registered Piano Technician (Piano Technician Guild) or the equivalent. This certification or commensurate experience is essential to maintain the McKnight Center's all-Steinway school designation.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Music-Piano Performance or similar. Registered Piano Technician (Piano Technician Guild) or the equivalent, with five years of extensive experience in piano tuning.  Certification or commensurate experience with services Steinway pianos.
