Job Summary:

The incumbent will assist the HPCC (High Performance Computing Center) Manager of Operations in daily operation and maintenance of HPCC systems, troubleshoot networks & storage, review logs, compile applications on Linux servers, work with vendors to resolve complex system problems, and/or provide user support.  The OSU HPCC is an extremely fast-paced environment; therefore, the candidate must demonstrate strong willingness to learn new technologies and take directions.  This position requires the ability to endure sitting and/or standing for long periods at a time and occasionally lifting 50+ lbs. 

The HPCC environment consists of around 450 bare-metal servers with predominantly CentOS 6 & 7 Linux operating systems, dozens of layer 2/3 switches, more than 1 petabyte of storage devices, environmental infrastructure, complex software configurations, and more than 1200 end user accounts.

The incumbent will be expected to work safely via Linux command line to analyze the system, provide day-to-day operations tasks, deploy new features, assist with system maintenances, and evaluate new tools for increasing system performance.  Additional duties will be determined by the incumbent's best strengths.

HPC is an extremely fast-paced environment; therefore, the incumbent must demonstrate a strong willingness to learn new technologies and take directions from superiors.  The incumbent will be expected to develop a professional working relationship with a highly diverse research community, such as undergrads, graduate students, staff, faculty and affiliates, from all domains of science.

Due to communication expectations of the position, the incumbent will be required to maintain cellular or other electronic communication.  After-hours maintenance and critical support may be required.

Some work will be done near high voltage sources, chilled water systems, and areas with above average noise level.

Position Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems (MIS), or other related technical field.

Three years of professional experience, with one year working with Linux command line, server hardware, networking, security and/or systems troubleshooting.

1.  Ability to perform basic systems analysis with Linux command line, implement best security practices, escalate issues to the Manager of Operations, troubleshoot computer systems, and display positive attitude toward system end users.
2.  Demonstrate the ability to solve complex technical issues and willingness to learn new, better ways to solve problems.
3.  The incumbent must demonstrate extreme attention to detail and the ability to think analytically.
4.  Possess good interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.

Preferred Qualifications:

Five years of administration experience with Linux, networking, storage area networks (SAN), security, scripting/programming, Linux-based software installations, and/or advanced troubleshooting.

Vendor-neutral certifications in Linux, networking, security, and/or programming languages.  (CompTIA, RHCE/RHCSA, CISSP)

Experience with high-level programming languages such as C++/FORTRAN or scripting (BASH/Python)
